Models

One of the biggest challenges facing the IT sector is the difficulty in getting skilled resources at a reasonable cost. This problem is exacerbated when the resource is needed for either a short time or intermittently.

The options available are:

  • Offshore the function

  • Hire a Permanent Employee

  • Hire an IT Contractor

  • Engage a Consulting Company

  • Each of these options come with their own issues.

  • Offshoring requires a lot of work in identifying the partner, agreeing contracts and more often than not you will still be charged when there is down-time on your projects

  • The Permanent Employee needs to have other work found for them when there is no need for their specific skill set. There is a continuous cost to the organisation

  • IT Contractors are expensive and might not be available when you need them if you release them between projects. You have to either let them go or incur a cost to retain them and their knowledge between projects

  • Consulting Companies are also expensive. They are motivated to sell as many consulting days as possible. You are not able to choose the resource that is deployed and many organisations complain about how junior the resources are.
